About

The Portland Press Herald listed Gunther Brown as one of its ‘ten bands to watch’. In doing so, Bob Keyes says-

“Gunther Brown’s music is earthy, eloquent and entirely honest. The band from Portland reminds one of early Jayhawks, with maybe a touch of Wilco. It’s Americana music, with roots that spread to folk, rock and old-time country.”

Gunther Brown’s singer & songwriter, Pete Dubuc, has always been around music. In fact, he was not even out of high school by the time he started working in commercial radio. On an FM radio station in Farmington, Maine, Dubuc was slinging vinyl - outdated as it was - and selecting his own tunes to play - another long outdated idea in the world of commercial radio. The world of radio would offer the opportunity to interview relevant songwriters and performers including Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Indigo Girls, Richard Shindell and countless others.

It’s hard to quantify how past experiences and close encounters with great music and writers will influence a person’s own voice but it makes sense to assume that this experience has had an impact on what Dubuc himself now creates. On that topic he states, “I think maybe the musical influence is more subliminal than anything .. I mean being exposed to LOTS of music and compelling music at that .. must bleed into you a little I guess, right? I mean you’d have to be not human to never be influenced by your environment I think”. What was the most valuable lesson learned from his radio experience? “Without a doubt, how to handle yourself. I was struck by the fact that the artists that I really respected even before encountering them came off as kind, genuine. The next week you would host some new artist, some kid, who marches in like king shit, doesn’t address anyone and acts like you’re bothering them by having them there promoting their work.” My take on that was - man, B.B. King was one of the most genuine and sweet human beings I’ve ever met. What do YOU have over B.B. King that you just can’t bother being gracious and … ah, you know … I just think music is about sharing a human experience and if you’re not genuine with people that will come across in the music and in people’s ability to connect with it. There are exceptions to every rule of course but in my world of music I found the good people to be the most successful.”
